Feng Shui compass 羅盤

A Luo Pan compass reads a facing direction and shows which of the 24 Mountains, eight trigrams and five elements it falls in. On a phone, allow the sensor and hold the device flat; on a desktop, drag the dial. Lock a reading, then send it to the room analyser.

Drag the dial, or use the phone compass.

No phone sensor? (laptop or desktop)

Laptops and most desktops have no compass sensor, so the live reading won’t work — but you can set the heading by hand in under a minute:

  1. Use your phone. Open its Compass app or Google/Apple Maps, point the phone the way your bed head or desk faces, read the degrees, and type them in the analyser or drag the dial to match.
  2. Use a real compass the same way, or the sun (it’s roughly south around midday in the northern hemisphere, north in the southern).
  3. Know only the rough direction? Tap it below and fine-tune with the slider.

The red line is your heading. Each cell is one of the 24 Mountains (15°). Cardinal mountains 子 卯 午 酉 are in red.

How to take an accurate reading

  1. Move away from interference. Metal furniture, speakers, laptops and magnetic phone cases can throw the reading by tens of degrees. Take the case off if it has a magnet.
  2. Calibrate. If the needle jumps or sticks, move the phone in a slow figure-eight for a few seconds — this recalibrates the magnetometer.
  3. Hold it flat at waist height, screen up, and stand where the thing you are measuring is: your back to the headboard for a bed, seated at the desk for a workspace, in the doorway facing out for a door.
  4. Take three readings a step apart and use the average. Then lock it.
  5. Facing vs sitting. A house “faces” the side with the most yang — usually the front door or the view. For a bed, the direction is where the top of your head points; for a desk, where you look.

The compass reads magnetic north. Feng shui traditionally uses magnetic north too, so no declination correction is needed.
