1 · Choose the room
Bedroom, living space or office. Each has its own checklist, because a bed and a desk want different things.
2 · Find your Kua

3 · Take the heading
Stand with your back to the headboard, or sit at the desk, phone flat, pointing the way you face. Lock the reading, or just type the degrees.

What the compass reads
The eight directions and their trigrams
North Kan (Water, career) · Northeast Gen (Earth, knowledge) · East Zhen (Wood, family & health) · Southeast Xun (Wood, wealth) · South Li (Fire, reputation) · Southwest Kun (Earth, relationships) · West Dui (Metal, children & creativity) · Northwest Qian (Metal, helpful people). This is the Later Heaven arrangement used for buildings.
The 24 Mountains
Each direction splits into three fifteen-degree sectors, twenty-four in all, named after stems, branches and trigrams: 子 Zi at true north, 卯 Mao east, 午 Wu south, 酉 You west. A facing of 352° and one of 8° are different mountains even though both are “north”.
Five elements
Wood feeds Fire feeds Earth feeds Metal feeds Water feeds Wood. Each direction carries an element; colours and materials that belong to that element, or to the one that feeds it, support the sector. Too much of the element that weakens it works against you.
Period 9
Feng shui counts twenty-year periods. We are in Period 9 (2024–2043), the Fire period, associated with the South, light, warmth and visibility. The compass app tradition marks auspicious Period-9 directions; our analyser adds a light Period-9 note to every reading.

What is a feng shui compass (Luo Pan)?
A Luo Pan is a compass with extra rings: the eight directions and their trigrams, the 24 Mountains (fifteen-degree sectors), elements and life areas. Practitioners use it to take the facing direction of a house, door, bed or desk and read which sector that direction falls in.
How do I take a facing direction with my phone?
Stand with your back to the headboard (or sit at your desk) and hold the phone flat, pointing the way you face or the way the top of your head points in bed. Move away from metal, speakers and magnets, and calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-eight if the reading jumps. Lock the reading and use it in the analyser.
What is my Kua number?
Your Kua (Gua) number comes from your birth year and sex in the Eight Mansions system, with a solar-year cutoff in early February. It sorts the eight directions into four favourable ones — Sheng Qi (growth), Tian Yi (health), Yan Nian (relationships), Fu Wei (stability) — and four to avoid. East group Kuas are 1, 3, 4 and 9; West group 2, 6, 7 and 8.
Which direction should my bed face?
In feng shui the bed direction means where the top of your head points. Aim for one of your favourable Kua directions — Tian Yi for rest and health, Yan Nian for partnership — while keeping the bed in the commanding position: headboard on a solid wall, door visible at an angle, feet not pointing straight at the door.
What is the commanding position?
The spot where you can see the door from the bed, desk or sofa without being directly in line with it, with a solid wall behind you. It is the single most important placement rule for bedrooms, offices and living rooms.
Is feng shui scientific?
No. Feng shui is a traditional design philosophy about how spaces feel and flow. Many of its rules — support behind you, seeing the entrance, light, order, living plants — overlap with good ergonomic and interior design, which is why people find them useful. We present it as reflection and design guidance, not as prediction or medicine.
Do I need my floor plan?
Not here. Our analyser asks simple yes/no questions about your room and an optional compass heading, so you can do it standing in the room. For a full house reading with Flying Stars, a floor plan and a consultant are the next step.
